Die Geschichte von Public Image Ltd (PiL) ist untrennbar mit dem Ende der Sex Pistols verbunden. Nach deren Implosion 1978 war John Lydon, ehemals Johnny Rotten, desillusioniert von der kommerziellen Vereinnahmung des Punk. Er gründete PiL nicht nur als Band, sondern als „Firma“ – Public Image Ltd. – ein bewusster Akt, um die kreative und finanzielle Kontrolle zurückzugewinnen. Dieser Schritt, inspiriert vom Roman „The Public Image“ von Muriel Spark, war Lydons Versuch, sein öffentliches Bild neu zu definieren und eine Karriere aufzubauen, die auf Innovation statt auf Skandalen basierte.
