Juli 1973 im Hammersmith Odeon, London, brannte sich ins kollektive Gedächtnis ein. Mit funkelndem Outfit betritt Bowie als sein Alter Ego Ziggy Stardust die Bühne und verkündet mit einem Hauch von Dramatik: „This is not only the last show of the tour, but it’s the last show that we’ll ever do.“ Die Spiders from Mars legen langsam ihre Instrumente nieder. Die Zeit scheint stillzustehen. Es ist der inszenierte Tod einer Kunstfigur, ein Schockmoment für die Fans, aber für Bowie nur ein weiterer Wendepunkt.
