Sadly... It seems there's a loss of interest among the general population for all things metaverse... People are moving on to other games, or not playing games at all any more, and taking on additional real life work to offset the crazy inflation happening around the world... I've noticed huge down turns in the numbers of people getting into virtual worlds lately. Can't say I blame 'em... All the name calling, in fighting, back biting, hate spewing, trolling, and worse going around.
But it is what it is... What is it? You ask... Well, it's such a huge reduction in numbers that only a small percentage of "hard-core" virtual lifers remain... It's sad... It's unfortunate... We have seen many grids recently shutting their doors and I fear we will see many more admins clicking the red power off button in the future. Anyway to all those leaving, I bid you safe travels, and a happy life. Remember us few lone die-hard souls forever permafrosted into the fabric of the metaverse...

I think VW has always been a niche. I mean even back in the days when I was really active in SL I would tell friends , family and random people I met about the metaverse and VW. I would even mention SL. None of them knew what I was even talking about...

Such a comment, about a "huge reduction in numbers" and 'crazy inflation all around the world" should come with some actual receipts. The math just does not back any of that up. Let me say up front, I am a noob who has only known OS for over a year, but I see tremendous growth around me and with PBR, creators now have so many great new tools to play with. What is going on at Wolfe Territories is great, and the Darkheart world has had to triple in size just to fit the people in. OSGrid itself might be declining, but i think that is self created as they block off their grid to the rest of Open Sim out of hand, not having faith in their own region owners to police our own projects. Not exactly a "welcoming" attitude, but hey, it is what it is. I still meet at least 1-2 people new to OS every day, mostly from SL and fed up with being gauged for her dollar that Ll can squeeze out of them. And yes, the fact that it is Summer is no small issue. I think a drop in activity during summer is pretty common, isn't it? OS as a whole is growing, OSGrid, maybe not so much but that seam by design, so i do not think things are as dire as described.

I often wonder if people coming over from SL decide to leave because there are so many little things that don't work as they should.
I have got used to the way it works here, but there are so many little things I wish worked as intended.
The most annoying things for me are:
In the build/object menu the "save back to object contents" option doesn't work. Meaning if you pull an object out of the inventory of a prim onto the floor and make a change to it, you can't save the change back into the prim using this option. You have to clog up your inventory with it and put back in the prim manually. Its just a small gripe, but it saves so much time when iterating a build.
Next is the janky way avatars have trouble walking up small steps. This seemingly random thing can be really annoying. You are trying to walk over a bump that is ankle height and you just can't make it over it. Yet sometimes I can walk right over an object taller than me. Trying to walk backwards over anything is impossible as it only seems to check for a step in front of you. Whatever that code is doing to push you up steps is ineffective and buggy. In SL you can glide over things with little effort. Here walking can be annoying as you are often fighting with the movement controls to unstick yourself.
Now voice is another issue. If you don't have a Vivox account then you're stuffed. Almost all multiplayer games have the ability to talk to other players these days. How open sim has not found a solution to this is very disappointing. While you can use 3rd party programs like discord, its not a smooth seamless experience to quickly talk to a random person that has just pooped by and you are likely never going to see again. We need a solution that works everywhere by default that everyone can access without modding the viewer or having to leave the viewer to start the voice chat. This really should be sorted out by now.
I won't go on about the permission system being broken or the lack of economy because of this.
I have many other niggles that I could bang on about, but I'm sure people coming over from SL notice stuff that puts them off.

Nothing annoys me about Opensim, though some things do frustrate me at times, usually those who use these worlds, but that's a given wherever there are people, and is even worse in RL. Opensim doesn't behave like Second Life simply because it isn't Second Life. That might sound a little trite, but it's just the way it is. Nowadays Opensim is far closer to Second Life in the way it works than it ever was in the past. Personally I had hoped that by now that Opensim would be light years beyond Second Life, but things change and whilst that might have been possible in the earlier days when Opensim had a number of developers, that isn't the case now, when there is only one developer working on core Opensim. The issue of voice has been covered previously, and I'm not about to enter that fray except to say that there are projects that could be developed, but no one is prepared to finance them... Ditto some of the capabilities of the viewer that don't work in Opensim. There have been various attempts to create an Opensim only viewer, but once again, they have been individual projects, and whilst Firestorm still allows access to Opnesim, the FS team have difficulties attracting Opensim developers, especially those with Linux skills. Viewers that also allow access to Second Life contain a lot of code that is not only unneeded for Opensim, but actually impede operations in Opensim. There is no easy way around this issue, as all mainsteam viewers are optimised for Second Life, which is to be expected, given that the numbers of users on Second Life dwarf the numbers who use Opensim.
The physics engine that affects the way an avatar walks is an ever ongoing thing. When I started in Opensim there was only really ODE physics running on X Engine. Avatars could walk, and run etc, but vehicles were not exactly well supported, and we had the grand choice between one of Sara Kline's golf carts, or Neb's Racer and maybe one or two other options. Evidently it had been decided, but I don't know who, that Opensim wouldn't have vehicles... Then, around 2014 a survey showed that of everything, the most desired thing was vehicles that worked, and so work started on Bullet physics and later of course we got ubODE and Y Engine, which brings vehicle script behaviour closer to that of vehicles in Second Life. As far as steps are concerned, since the change to Bullet required a different, and considerably bigger avatar capsule, walking up and down stairs and steps became a little problematic. I've had to adjust some of my builds to accommodate the physics changes, but in terns of getting your avatar to walk up stairs and steps smoothly I've found it necessary to include an invisible prim that allows the avatar to glide up and down steps.
Most who come from Second Life usually don't stay because they find Opensim quite empty of avatars, and many don't grasp that Opensim is a confederation of grids, and not one grid like SL. Opensim also runs on servers quite literally located all over the globe rather than in just a single datacentre somewhere in the USA as is the case with Second Life. Things don't work like Second Life here, because it isn't Second Life. Most who come here aren't builders either, but we have far more who don't build nowadays than in the past where virtually everyone built and also ran their own regions, if not their own standalones or even separate worlds, like Dorena has done since quite early in in Opensim history.
The great thing about Opensim is that it's opensource, so if there is a feature you want there is nothing stopping you creating it, all you need are the skills. That applies to a voice module as it does to developing a dedicated viewer solely for Opensim, or even a completely different feature that you think might be good. Let's not forget that's how we got things like Varregions, the 4096 bug crushed, the tide module, or even an inworld currency module.

Fresh SL converts in particular try to navigate OpenSim or even just OSgrid just like they navigate SL. Via categories. No wonder they hardly find anything because hardly any sim in OSgrid is filed into one of these categories and therefore directly accessible in the viewer.
I kid you not, there are absolute SL veterans who have never in their lives used the map to teleport. They don't even know you can do that, much less how. Truth be told, though: Even though I've never been in SL, it took me a while to figure out how to teleport and especially Hypergrid using the map because there was nothing and nobody who could have told me how.
Which takes us to the onboarding issue which comes on top of an even steeper learning curve than in SL. But that's another story and shall be told another time.

The point is that the problem exists and Bulletsim is the default physics engine. People from SL will notice how janky things are in comparison.
Have you ever been to the clothing sim Agora on Osgrid? You spawn in a trough with an ankle high lip around the edge that is hard to walk out of. A real person would be able to simply step over it, but here you get stuck like moron walking into a brick wall. In SL you would simply bump over it without an issue.

That, and ubODE is its own can o' worms. It can't handle certain hollow meshes as hollow, and then you can't enter certain buildings although there isn't even a door in your way. That's also what you get for ripping SL content, importing it into OpenSim and never testing it. SL meshes aren't made for ubODE compatibility.
It's possible to work around the stairs issue with BulletSim by adding an invisible diagonal prim to the stairs. But hardly anyone knows this trick, and seriously, who builds anything with prims these days when people would love to be able to "buy" entire ripped SL sims and plop them down in one piece if they could?

Most who have been around for a while are well aware of the prim ramp fix and often do that. I've already mentioned the workaround for resolving the issues with ubode. It would have been easy enough for them to have included the original meshmerizer that what only needed four lines of code to be activated. Core in its wisdom decided not to do that and try to insist on a physics map for meshes whereas simply utilizing the mesmerizer option will fix it with no downside that I'm aware of.

Sure I'm well aware that many regions use Bulletsim, either because it is default or one is using it for certain vehicle scripts. The reasons it was left as default is a little involved but the option is available to switch to Ubode physics. Even the Developer Misterblue acknowledges that Ubode is the better physics engine for smoothness of stair climbing and the only physics engine still maintained as he will only do small fixes on Bullet as it has reached its limit of what is possible.

I love it where I am I can be myself come and go as I please, build and many times its nice to be alone to create think be happy and yes I do HG around to see what's out there. I don't think the OS folks are disappearing they may change their name and stay away from the drama. I have seen so much of it and I mum and move on, not my cup of tea.

Yes. People will always have different views. Different views is a source of contention. Arguments spring from contention. An argument is the same as a debate + anger. I prefer civil debate, not argument. Argument raises blood pressure, makes everyone feel bad, creates emotional overflow, generates enemies. Debate on the other hand, fosters learning, resolves issues, and creates friendships, and is backed by fact. Arguments are backed by Assumptions. When you ASSuME you make an ASS out of U & ME.

There is literally NO drop in OpenSIM users! They are even a little more than before.
I say again, there is a drastic drop in visits through the Hypergrid and the reason is in the mass ban policy because of absolute nonsense! Examples?
OK:
1. Ban in LBSA because I am without panties in a long ball gown WITHOUT a slit....
2. Ban in EventPlaza because the picture in my profile is from a nudist beach...
3. Ban in Zeta because I don't have a registered company in whose name to register a domain name and grid (dindns)...
4. Ban in DH because I don't share the LGBT dreams and desires of their admins...
5. And of course a mass ban here on OSW because I don't condone traffic/visitor count faking….
6. Oh yeah... I forgot about the Arkham Grid ban and do you know why? I told him that the entry point is so cluttered with lights that I can't see where I am :)

Dorenas World as a whole is blocked by ZetaWorlds. for not having a valid enough imprint. At least I think it still is because I keep using my OSgrid backup avatars to visit ZetaWorlds.
As for Darkhearts and Arkham, I haven't been there for quite a while, years in Arkham's case. No idea if any of my avatars are banned there.
And as far as the Plazas are concerned, I was actually afraid of Juno getting banned in an outfit that's much more modest than 95% of all female outfits in OpenSim because some mod would cam up her knee-length skirt, take the rules literally and decide that the underpants under her sheer tights count as "exposed underwear". Or because some mod would NOT cam up her skirt, take her sheer tights for stockings (because who'd make tights or wear them anyway), think the stockings are part of a lingerie set (because where else would you find stockings) and ban her for breaking the "no lingerie" rule.
That is, either they've changed the wording of the Plaza rules recently to keep overzealous mods from applying the rules too literally, or what I've seen recently was actually a way outdated version of the rules. I'll have to go re-check.
In your defence, Pagane, I think most ballgowns can't be worn with mesh underwear anyway, and hardly any freebie sim offers any layer clothes nowadays. And whoever expects and demands female avatars to always alpha out their loins should openly say so.

I have to agree with what your saying, a lot of times in plaza people would get banned for unjustified reasons. In other grids its either your avatars to short or your website doesn't comply with whatever.

There have always been and will always be people who come and go. Why do many of us bet on OpenSim? For a very simple reason, we like to create, we are curious, we investigate, we learn.
It is not easy for us, at least in my case, but it encourages us to learn. We are kept by belonging to the group, to friends,

I haven't been on SL in 6 months, and I went on the other night to attend a Burning Man event. They had about 60 people at peak, and it was so laggy it was really unbearable and local chat wasn't even functioning. Are those the kind of crowds we really want?
Our grid has been open for 2 1/2 years. Including our previous grid, a total of about 8 years. The past year or so, we have been doing really well. We do not have super high active numbers, but the people who are on regularly are very busy building beautiful things and seem to get a lot of value from it. If we had a "happiness index" like Denmark, I'd say that using a quality of life metric like that, things have really improved. For a long time we had mostly people who bounced from grid to grid to grid. Now a lot consider it home. In all the years I have been in OpenSim, this past year has been the most satisfying.
I don't think OpenSim will generically appeal to most SL people. But we have valuable resources to offer specific communities. Like our grid has a large portion of the SL Burning Man community, and they love having huge areas to build on. Or we could focus on attracting other communities that we can specifically offer something of value to. The trade-off being less crowds, no SL marketplace, etc. but pretty limitless resources to build.

That doesn't speak for SL, does it?
I mean, I myself love small events where you can actually use the local chat as a chat without loads of people spamming it with gestures.
But big events with 50, 60 or more avatars happen on special occasions. And if they really suffer from server lag, that's because the region server underneath the sim is unfit for the task. Hypergrid International Expo has recently changed from an OSCC-style around-the-sim-corners build with one sim for the stage and three for the audience to a single sim because you can throw such a lot at region servers nowadays.
Just recently, I was at a Woodstock-inspired peace festival. At least half the German OpenSim scene was there plus some more avatars from elsewhere. We were over 55 avatars at times. No problems. Some avatars took long to rez, but you have that all the time with today's unoptimised hi-poly avatars.
A bit less than two years ago, Juno modelled at a fashion show. There were over 60 avatars. Nobody had expected that many avatars, and I think they didn't even have seats for all of them. No problems again, only the viewer FPS tanked when she turned towards where the other models were stashed away. Granted, the sim as it was during the fashion show had no scripts running except for the chairs for the audience, and it was purpose-built for this event instead of being a big, multi-purpose var.

Not to mention that you can probably pay less for a 4x4 var in OpenSim than for a parcel with a few hundred prims in SL.

As you've said, many don't even know that OpenSim exists. Others have heard of OpenSim a while ago, but not recently, and they assume it's dead, just like many people assume SL has been dead since 2008/2009 due to lack of media coverage. Little do they know that OpenSim is about 80% as active as Second Life and has over four times the land area.
And of course, then there are those who have invested too much time and money into SL to leave so easily. But there's no reason to not take a look at OpenSim next to SL.

That doesn't speak for SL, does it?
I mean, I myself love small events where you can actually use the local chat as a chat without loads of people spamming it with gestures.
But big events with 50, 60 or more avatars happen on special occasions. And if they really suffer from server lag, that's because the region server underneath the sim is unfit for the task. Hypergrid International Expo has recently changed from an OSCC-style around-the-sim-corners build with one sim for the stage and three for the audience to a single sim because you can throw such a lot at region servers nowadays.
Just recently, I was at a Woodstock-inspired peace festival. At least half the German OpenSim scene was there plus some more avatars from elsewhere. We were over 55 avatars at times. No problems. Some avatars took long to rez, but you have that all the time with today's unoptimised hi-poly avatars.

I understand what you're saying, Hyacinth, I've been in Open Sim now for about 5 maybe 6 years, but I was in SL prior to that and before that AOL and SL and OS are definitely a step up from that old dinosaur, but that said, I have given up worrying about numbers and ranks because it just isn't important to me. What is important is that when people visit they enjoy their visit and want to return, and that new grid members will enjoy their membership and their region and create and design beautiful things for folks to visit and enjoy. With all the ugliness in real life it's nice to have a place where we can create beautiful and peaceful places, where we can dream a dream and watch it come to be even if it is only virtual there is a level of contentment in that. I very much enjoy my time spent in Open Sim but what I love is when other's visit and enjoy what I've made, that makes it worth it all.

I agree on the lag in sl, when I was in utherverse before opensim I used to have 75 people in my club. And yes it was pushing the lag.

My take is that as active development of Opensim code dropped and turned to a maintenance mode, personal drama increased, especially on sites like Opensimworld. It used to be over at HGB but that seems to have slowed and stopped there as residents became less interested in the technical aspects and turned instead to culture wars of different grids and the lifestyles they engage in.
If Opensim core was to actually do some serious development again, it may trigger a reawakening in the potential of the platform rather then blindly following the way of SL and attract people from SL and beyond in taking part where we have the freedom to adopt or reject the latest fiasco the Lindens are pushing on its residents.

I think interest in HGB is because the interest of Maria Korolov in Opensim has waned and the website is now used to promote news of things like VR and AI, which is fine, but the site is a shadow of its former self when all things Opensim were discussed there. Comments there were at least strictly but fairly moderated, something OSW could learn from. The main barrier to Opensim core being under active development is the lack of developers. Up until around 2015 there were quite a large number of very active developers involved in the project and new stable versions of the software were being released several times a year. It's interesting looking at the release history of the Diva Distro. There was a point where there were several releases a year, but now we're lucky if we get a new release every two years.

Eh...it isn't the back biting. Like Jimmy Olsen says: No one ever leaves OS; they just make a new alt. ;) But there are a few things working against us, imo: 1) In SL, there is more regular centralized activity. Things are easier to find. If you want something, you just go on the marketplace and throw money at it. :/ Here, you have to work at it. Find like minded peeps; physically hunt for things; network; use OSW, FB, and the like; use your own imagination; and, here is the toughest part - learn to be creative! You don't have to a builder, you just need to have great and fun ideas! You make your own fun! And that is really hard for many. Part of Second Life's major challenge and their ebbs and flows are that they continue to have this mythological belief that their market is made up of gamers. NO...gamers are gamers! This is a different crew.
2) Every time an adjustment is made that requires bigger, faster, and more powerful computers; it results in gatekeeping people who either don't have the funds or don't have the priority to buy a computer to make this work optimally. Good gaming desktops that perform well with video cards that are not chip embedded start at about 1300 and rapidly go up. Then, if you are getting something in that lower price range, you need to plan on upgrading sooner than later. Gaming laptops are even higher for entry. We are pricing the average potential user out of the environment. Many SL users are losing ability to be inworld due to the forced PBR changes, and they don't even know about OS or that it doesn't have that requirement!

I always hear from SL folks that Open Sim is barren by comparison. In my experience, that's simply not true. I usually talk to more people in Open Sim while in world, vs SL. I'm not talking about group chats, there are plenty of those in SL, but talking to people in world, face to face. I get more of that contact in Open Sim. *shrug* just my dumb luck I guess lol 😂

There could be two reasons for those SL users' perception.
One, they're used to absolutely massive crowds, so they perceive even what happens at big anniversary parties as "only few people here".
Two, like many other OpenSim newbies/non-regulars, they don't know OSW, so they don't know how and where to look up parties and busy places.
If you teleport and/or walk around randomly, it could happen that you meet nobody.

No loss of interest here. Things are better than they have ever been in the Metaverse. I imagine OS is much like SL in that I noticed years ago in SL that the sales from my store went down in the summer and came back up in the Fall. People tend to vacation during the summer and anyone who has children is spending time with them while they are out of school.
A lot of people are showing up at the music venues, especially if it is a big event, so folks looking to hang out with people should check out the event schedule. Some places like AMV have a party going on all the time to accommodate different time zones. Several places have Greedy and other games going on. That is something I am interested in if I could remember to go. Seems like there is always something going on that gets people together, so yeah...you only have to go. If you are only wandering random places exploring the fabulous builds so many of us in OS have made, well you are likely to only see NPCs and maybe, the owner. If you can grab a friend to go explore with you, that makes it more fun. And some of you need to consider moving your feet instead of standing at the landing and camming. You miss so much doing that. Different places may have different sounds and skies but you only hear what is there where you are and only see the skies above you. You have to walk to see the changes and find the hidden secrets on the land. People are still here. Long Live The Metaverse!

The grid that I am on is running good with the numbers. Summer has its place, but those will return in the fall once again. It's a great idea to get out and get some fresh air, but when it's so hot that some of us can't even breath outside with how hot it gets, we must stay indoors and make dew of what we can.
As far as the grids banning people just because they don't like them or heard something that didn't measure up, without going to that person and finding out the truth, I bid you farewell, as your grid is not even worth a passing thought.

Oh, in my OpenSim environment everything is fine and it's completely normal that many people spend a little more time in real life in the summer.

I've been blocked by people I don't recall ever having interacted with.
Some people here block people by association, i.e. for having the wrong friends or being on the wrong grid. Others block people for having the wrong opinions, promoting the wrong content, wearing the wrong body or whatever.

Well, I've been trying to warn for years that the mass obsession with bans, restrictions, divisions, and all sorts of other systems of hate will lead to this. (Look in my profile about my posts)
Nothing else can happen because:
1. Every single one of us is banned or at least unwanted on at least 50% of the other networks because of height, color, gender, clothing, and the like.
2. Each of us has invented and applies our own criteria of what is moral, permissible or beautiful. As a result, OpenSIM was filled with hideous three-meter monsters with psychiatric asses and genitalia simulators stupidly attached here and there.
3. Harassment of residents for visiting other networks and even a ban, because someone danced in a rival club, began.
4. Network owners require you to open an account on their network in order to visit it.

At the end of the day we just build, decorate and landscape for just ourselves. People do visit but most if not all never return. The best grid is the RL grid one that for the most part never disappoints. We all need to get a little fresh air and step outside a bit more. SL and Opensims are great but there greatness is a perfect time waster thats just my opinion.

Opensim has always been the home of the creative and more tech savy persons.
With the advent of Dreamgrid software and the likes, it makes it easier for the less tech savy person, to create their own grid and the availability of free land on the multitude of grids makes opensim attractive for a lot of ex SL peeps.
We will always have what I call "Transient people", the ones that come in, take a free parcel, do their house, and decorate, get bored a month or two later and move on - this will always happen.
But the creative people have a passion for making stuff that is useful and fun - this is what keeps them here. I also feel if people have a sense of ownership - being part of a team, or a community - that will keep them interested and busy.
I am always busy - I have millions of things to do, my brain won't stop. I build, script, dabble in mesh, graphics - and I have a great circle of friends in other grids as well, that I can bounce ideas off.
But sadly, not everyone has the creative bug, and need to be entertained to get their jollies, and sadly, there is only so many ways to be entertained, until some other interest takes over for them.
The fix - get creative, network with others, expand your horizons.
There is much more out there, than your parcel of land, or your lonely little grid with a few regions on it.
Get out and connect with people.
