Nachdem ihm wegen eines abgelaufenen Visums die Wiedereinreise nach Großbritannien verwehrt wurde, endete seine Zeit bei der richtungsweisenden Canterbury-Band Soft Machine abrupt. Doch dieser Schicksalsschlag erwies sich als schöpferischer Katalysator. Gestrandet in Paris, einer Stadt, die in den späten 60er Jahren von künstlerischer und politischer Gärung brodelte, fand Allen den perfekten Nährboden für seine unkonventionellen Ideen.
