A poem I wrote a couple of years back! Our world view is always shaped by our echo chamber.

Days of Evil

In those days of evil we became divided

We were barbarians at each others throat
In both word and deed
Our love for our fellow countrymen
Turned to hatred and chose a side

We were pitted against one another
Determined that our side was right
And any who strayed were torn to shreds
Old wounds were torn wide open

We were told that we would be the heroes
Of a new revolution, a new world
The young heeded the call to arms
Thinking that they were invincible

“We know the right way!” they cried
“If you are not for us you are against us!”
They thought it was something new
it had happened many times before

The outcome is always the same
A terrible toll on humankind
It always ends in the killing of the other
The other that we hated, that we blamed

We should weep over our arrogance
Get on our knees and cover ourselves with ashes
Grieve for what we bought on all
Mourn deeply for our humanity lost

How did we get to this point?
Perhaps it was the propaganda
That spewed forth from our tvs
That we so easily fell for

How did we become so frenzied?
Maybe it was the powers that be
Who wanted to keep us divided
To distract from their misdeeds

How did we find it so easy to hate?
Perhaps it was the whisper in our ears
’See that person over there?”
“They are to blame for all your issues!”

How were we so easy to manipulate?
It is not because We were dumb or innocent
It is that we wanted an excuse to act out
Our hatred of the other!!

Jeder vernünftig denkende Mensch sollte diese Veranstaltung unterstützen – die Bedrohung durch die extreme Rechte reicht weit über Deutschland hinaus und bedroht uns alle. Dabei bräuchte es nichts weiter, als dass wir, die einfachen Leute, unsere Politiker mit der Botschaft überschwemmen und ihnen mitteilen, dass wir eine Veränderung der gescheiterten neoliberalen Wirtschaftspolitik FORDERN, die den Aufstieg der extremen Rechten vorantreibt. Jüngste Umfragen in Großbritannien haben gezeigt, dass 52 % der Generation Z (Menschen zwischen 13 und 27) der Meinung sind, Demokratie sei Zeitverschwendung und wir wären besser dran, wenn ein wohlwollender Diktator uns regieren würde. Das Problem ist, dass es noch nie einen Diktator gegeben hat, der ist seit über einer Woche wohlwollend! Man kann die wirklich Rechtsextremen wahrscheinlich nie abbringen, aber wie Deutschland weiß, sind es nicht die eingefleischten Faschisten, die von selbst an die Macht kommen: Es ist das Versagen der etablierten Politiker, den Sorgen der einfachen Leute Gehör zu schenken. , anständige Menschen, und sie ernst nehmen, die Veränderungen bewirken, die die Menschen sehen wollen, aber stattdessen die Menschen ignorieren und sie so dazu treiben, für die extreme Rechte zu stimmen, in der Hoffnung, Veränderungen herbeizuführen, oder überhaupt nicht wählen zu gehen und die extreme Rechte -right übernimmt standardmäßig die Kontrolle. Wir in Europa müssen diesen Standpunkt vertreten, nicht nur für uns selbst, sondern auch, um den Staffelstab für die vielen Amerikaner hochzuhalten, die derzeit große Sorge um die Zukunft ihres Landes unter einem neofaschistischen Präsidenten haben.

Ich werde da sein, und du?

Every decent thinking person should support this event - the threat of the far-right extends far beyond Germany and threatens us all. Yet all it would take is for us ordinary people to deluge our politicians and let them know that we DEMAND change from the failed neo-liberal economic policies that are driving the rise of the far-right. Recent polls in the UK has shown that 52% of Gen Z (people 13 to 27) think that democracy is a waste of time and that we;d be better off ruled by a benevolent dictator - trouble is there has never been a dictator who has been benevolent for more than a week! One can possibly never turn those who are truly of the far-right but as Germany knows, it's not the dyed-in-the-wool fascist that gain power on their own: it's the failure of mainstream politicians to listen to the concerns of ordinary, decent people , and take them seriously, making the changes the people want to see, but instead ignoring the people, thus driving them to vote for the far-right in the hope of effecting change, or not voting at all, letting the far-right take control by default. We in Europe need to make this stand, not jsut for ourselves but also to hold the baton for those many Americans now very concerned about the future of their country under a neo-fascist president
