Also, not a liberal by any means. I am a Reagan Republican from a deep red state. I just have some common sense and don't see political conspiracies attached to every mundane issue. So that makes you 0-2 in the assumption department.
Now lets look at what we DO agree on. We both agree that LL and specifically the SL wing has been grossly mismanaged, and we also seem to agree that their policies have been abused more than once by their team for no good reason than to settle some scores or silence people who do not agree with them.
Where we diverge is the notion or hope that there will be some sort of huge damage suffered by LL over what is slowly amounting to a really bad HR issue. Some people are going to get fired, if they have not already. That and about 3,000 more words to the SL TOS will likely be the end of it. Also, it is pretty weak sauce to complain about LL doing something and then turning around and doing the exact same thing, but you do you.

Interesting that you brought up Caspervend. They seem to have suffered the most damage of anyone (that we know of) due to the original article, and I agree that could be a big "in-world" issue. That should be concerning because any link between them and all the claims being made are pretty vague and not corroborated by anything.

I think the biggest issue is that of public perception. A financial institution is going to find itself in dire straights if the public believe that it is facilitating the kind of thing we're talking about. It doesn't matter if it actually is ... because public perception isn't always based on fact, but on what the headlines told them. We only have to look at the amount of outright lies that the media have regularly promulgated in the past decade to see that in action. We live in a time when clickbait and misinformation is the primary methodology of much (most) of the mainstream media, and much of the public have the attention spans of goldfish and can't be bothered reading the article to get the actual facts. I've done it myself, as have we all.
So if Tilia see that the rumours are spreading, they may well feel that they need to bail on SL. Whether that is justifiable by the facts isn't relevant ... we've seen that companies have little fortitude these days and will bend the knee to pressure at the drop of a hat. We saw with the Bud Light fiasco that a brand can be decimated if the right focus is found to cause the public to turn on that brand. And that was just beer. Imagine if someone could trigger a mass campaign which convinced the public that SL is a hotbed of Child Pornography? Tilia would be gone like a shot. I'm not saying it SHOULD happen, or WOULD happen, I'm saying that it's possible and if the owners of Tilia haven't thought about it, they are idiots.
Medium jerking the article isn't necessarily the win that people seem to think it is. I've seen, in-world, several discussion on the topic and the general consensus is that Medium aren't as balanced as they claim to be and would easily have caved to pressure from someone with sufficient influence, especially given that their staff seem to share the same political views espoused by LL. In fact Medium removing the article is seen as more evidence that LL couldn't disprove the allegations. Remember what I said about public perception ... what the reality is doesn't necessarily matter.

Good points, and I agree with some of them, but you have to remember that, outside the small minuscule percent of the population that inhabits SL and OS, the "public perception" is completely non-existent. (If you have ever tried to explain OS or SL to a stranger who has never heard of it, you know what I mean.) Sure, it is very big news to us, but for 99.7% of the media and the public, this story does not even exist. I shared your shame concerns at the start. When a few posts on social media picked up the story, I figured it would catch some attention. It didn't. I would not define Medium pulling the article as a "win" or a "loss" but they do not pull things lightly. So the fact that they did point to a lot of what the Typepad article i posted posted alludes too - that while there are many sordid allegations in the Medium article, there was very little in the way of proof. there was no claim at all of criminal behavior. Gross behavior, yes. Hypocrisy on the part of Patch Linden, yes. Workplace harassment, yes. (the most serious and provable claim IMO) Criminal behavior, no. The use of a fake identity to post the article also probably called the motives of the author into question. The tepid, boilerplate statement from LL was sad, but probably exactly what they needed to do business-wise. With the original claims now archived, this issue will fade fast and be of interest only to those of us who spend a lot of time in these virtual worlds. That is not many in the overall population.

None of whom were directly tied to anything illegal or a even in some cases a violation of LL rules. With LL being so vague in their response, would these people ever have the cloud lifted over their name? Probably unlikely, but something we should all think about. The fact that this incident is not gaining much public attention might be a good thing for now.

I'm more concerned about some grifter (there are many, on both sides of politics) with a big audience suddenly 'discovering' it and blowing it up. We recently saw gaming blow up into a big issue with the Sweet Baby Inc thing, and it's attracted the attention of people who typically scorn gaming.

We have to remember that gaming is now bigger than the movie industry in financial terms, and incorrectly, SL/OSG falls under the category of gaming. Agreed Vicki. As a corporate owner as well, I realized that even bad news was great for publicity. But when it is toxic and serious, it needs to be immediately addressed, handled and rectified. I finally pulled the plug on SL a few weeks ago. I have a few friends there, and a church community that I have been a member of for 15+ years. Other than that, the place really held little interest for me. It didn't take much of a nudge to get me out of there. The activities mentioned in the article were not all that shocking. That stuff has been happening for years. In OpenSim, we are a lot more empowered to decide what kind of world we want to build and live in. In SL, the cost is prohibitive, most things are strictly controlled, but the rules obviously don't apply to everyone. Our church community there pays almost as much as our RL mortgage payment for two sims there that they have little control of, it is crazy.
I work full time at a pretty brutal job. I only have so many hours. I'd rather spend my time working on our own little relatively happy, peaceful corner of the world. I hope more people come to a similar decision.

Indeed! That shows you how bad the SL system for land ownership has become. Sure, land rental in SL comes with many more assets that OS does not... cloud systems, enhanced lighting and you can actually get an IM to someone on the other end of the map, but even that stuff does not come close to justifying the HUGE gouging that is going on. The pricetag is so high in SL, that anything not purely prophet drive, (Like your wonderful church for example!) Are nearly impossible to accomplish in SL

I'm not quite sure what you mean. At least on our grid, we have all those features (other than their marketplace and economy). If anything we are technologically superior. I always felt like I'd been wandering around in a dirty, decaying wasteland where nothing works, in SL... and logging back in to OpenSim is like coming home to Wakanda. lol Generally when any new features are implemented in SL, it takes them years and years to roll out. And it takes us about 3-6 months to catch up and implement the new features here, and they just wind up working better on our end.
The church idea... I am actually emulating what we currently have in SL. They have two full regions out in the middle of the ocean, that cost close to $600/mo. About half my RL mortgage. About 10 or 15% of the time, one of their regions is down, or causing problems for the other one. Unless you are a single, isolated sim in SL, that is usually the case.
The church area that I created on our grid is 54 SL sized regions in land area, and surrounded by a HUGE mainland. You can sail a boat or take a train ride from there and travel and explore for hours without really hitting a snag. That is possible on the mainland in SL, but it's definitely not much fun. There are ban lines and regions down everywhere, all around you.
As far as the sheer numbers of people, and the old real estate adage "location, location, location!". At least as far as the church community goes, that has not been the case. Wayyyyy back in the day, when SL was hot, and had a lot of excited people. We would get a lot of new traffic. For the past 10 years, every weekly service, we might see one or two new faces. And they were usually a griefer. lol We would gain maybe one or two interested members per year. So for a project like this. SL literally has no advantage whatsoever. In OpenSim we can attract a lot of new people, and just have a much nicer, bigger, lag free and less distracting environment. That whole 54 region area... costs me maybe like $3 or $4 to host. It is nothing. It is as close to free as you can get. :)

I hope you are correct because that sounds amazing! Being fairly new here, I did not think OS was capable of Physically Based Lighting yet, so I am glad to hear that it is! I will have to get on my landlord because he seems to be dropping the ball because I do not have it. Not to mention that sending an IM to a person who is offline, or who is standing on another grid is a 60/40 chance of success for me. Again, being new, I was unaware of an in-world currency that we can transfer into RL currently. All I have been able to use are the Gold Coins which, let's face it, have no actual value attached to them. (not to mention I have to empty my trash folder almost every day and I thought it was because a lot of my inventory was saved on my PC instead of server side!) Wakanda Forever! Woot!
Also, I am sorry to here that the visitors you were getting at your church were griefers. I would think that would take a special kind of soulless bottom dweller to commit such an act, but I guess they are out there. As a minister of the Universal Life church myself, I am glad you have not let it stop you!

That's true but on that grid people are paying for continued development, long term backup, consistency and a support staff that in theory at least stages events, polices the grid, and handles the economy for micro payments. If we had all those services here we would need to be paying more then we do.

Sorry Arielle, their "Support Staff" is pretty much non-existent. I had only seen a blue dot 2 times in 15 years. The only time it was "Policed" was the day they banned me for defending myself against being attacked by 20+ insane uneducated political activists who read my profile and found me in an empty sim cleaning my inventory and felt the need to attack me for existing. But I was banned by the "police" because the attackers were losing their argument and particle/push/verbal attacks.
As for that economy. When they forced everyone to use "TIllia" it became a dictatorship. Even though I would not use PayPal now anymore because of their donating to racist BLM, I have an account since 2001. To force me to use DIE Affirmative Action activist Venmo, is dictatorial and a reason I stopped doing business activities in SL.

On a happier note. Because I will no longer be attending our church services on Thursday nights in SL, and will miss them terribly, I decided to do my own thing here. April 17th the service will be about "Women in Astrophysics", and their amazing work and struggles in a male-dominated field from 1925 to present. Sounds strange for a church service, but we are Unitarian Universalists. This is fairly typical subject matter. Quite a few of my friends from SL have already signed up on our OpenSim grid, and have helped a bit, I think they just need to see me follow through, and not flake on this. :)

FreshVirtualWorld's response was very helpful for the conversation loool actually, his response unfortunately shows that some people just don't engage their thinking and react badly without specific reasons and in a stupid way. For example, if Europe makes a specific law for metaverses, Opensimulator will fall under it, but Fresh demonstrates how low the intellectual level of some people is lol.

I can understand people's sensitivity, but I don't think his comment and reaction are justified.
The post is quite clear, and there are valid comments and responses, even emotionally. The concern is legitimate, and in the post, there are a series of questions. What does blocking someone have to do with this post? He should have expressed his thoughts, but instead, he clearly stated, 'SL is SL, OS is OS, I'll block anyone who talks about SL in this place, you're the first!' I believe it has little to do with his 'noble' mood; it's just a silly comment since the topic of any new laws to regulate the metaverses would apply to all of us who inhabit them.

In addition, he behaves even more foolishly and questionably by unblocking blocked individuals to respond and then blocking them again (hahaha, amusing but ridiculous). This behavior reflects on the quality of actions of this person, which is why his comments will be deleted, always.

It's the result of cancel culture. My last name is aptly named based on how many times I was for over 25+ years of internet experience.I see Fresh's point though that this website should be focused on OpenSim and not toxic SecondLife which is just ONE GRID, though the one that started it all and most famous. I personally indulge in payback and block woketards proactively since it was done to me for years.
However I do think you are partly right OpenLife about fresh's reaction being a bit overboard and hasty. But everyone wanted cancel culture and got it, now they are against it?
One thing I am sick of in life is saying "I told you so" so many freaking times. But alas, it applies again.

I dont post anything sl related but im glad to know what is going on in sl concerning stuff like this. if SL gets shut down or those types of people get banned, only place they might run too is opensim. I certainly dont want them here. but being informed can help me watch out and watch out for other members on my grid.

I think the beginning of the end was weeks ago when the Medium article was pulled down. I think you are seeing things wrapping up now. There will likely be another press release in a month or two with some new TOS changes at Second Life, likely for the worse and not better. We'll most likely see some new staff and possibly a change or even elimination of the "Mole" program. That will be the end of it. I don't see how any of this effects OS.

think about it, lets say they all get banned, or sl is shut down or they change there tos. where do you think they will go when they cant get ot sl, they may flee to opensim. we all have to be prepared in case that happens.

I will probably regret this, but I will bite. Who is this "they" you speak of. IS there some secret underground cabal planning to invade OS. I don't know how to tell you this, but SL is not going anywhere. Some people are going to get fired. The ungodly vague TOS at SL will have about 5000 more words added to it... and that will be it. I am no fan of Linden Lab, but i do not think we need to be making more out of this than it is.

Ive learned that people want to complain about it but no one wants to do anything about it. I posted something relating to pedo on a specific grid and not many people cared enough to want to do anything about.

for me opensim is a hoby and i wish to keep it for fun. so ye i chose to just ignor the bad apples i cant fix it anyways and have no right to do so to. (grids are like countries. they decide their own rules)

well most countries dont allow child porn and such, at least i try to help people instead of ignoreing things like this and letting it happen.

most grid don't allow it either but there will always be bad apples in the community. however in opensim it's really easy for them to hide out. we dont know most grids that are out there floating around on the internet.in the opensimulator comunety there are only a select few grids that publicly show that they exist. and for many different reasons ther are mutch mroe grids that do not promote themselves., i'm not saying that they are all bad. because opensimulator is used for many things.

If people don't control they're grids right they deserve whats coming to them. Sadly it may effect opensim as well. This is why some people close off their grids to HG cause of crap like this. I think private grids are ok the ones paying for server. It'll be hard to attract players to your grid privately but then again, I guess we will have to see. I think OS will still be around but will be bound by rules by the government. I just dont get people today and allowing sex child crap! OS needs a strict policy in place. I also think Fred (dreamgrid) should do up a policy to protect himself from these predators. Hes created a software to allow us users to create grids and many take advantage and allow child avatars sex w/child avatars. However Fred should charge for his software which includes upgrades. This will or can eliminate those pesky predators. (I think) I believe each grid owner should have a strict policy about child avatars, I'm gonna do one myself to protect myself and members. have it so your grid owners can use the members IP and send it to the local authorities, sounds like alot but its worth it to protect yourself and others.

Possibly. But that makes a large assumption that many of the claims made in the original Medium article are/were true. Personally, I think the fact that the article was pulled and written under a pen name have to make many of the allegations questionable. I think it was hit job by someone who had an axe to grind, but that is just my opinion. Also, many of the allegations would be a violation of Linden's ever-growing "terms of service" but not much of a legal issue. At worst, Second Life gets one more self-inflicted PR blackeye, which may ultimately benefit OS and other grids. Also, I feel like the decentralized way most of OS functions inoculates it from a lot of what LL may be (or may NOT be) staring at. I think that is a good thing.

Well ... that statement from Oberwager said nothing, and that concerns me.
There's literally no way that it should take this long to ascertain the validity or lack thereof of the accusations in that article. The region that was fingered either had or didn't have the stuff that was allegedly there. There should be backups to ascertain what state it was in before the article came out, if the 'investigators' think it was cleaned up after the article was published. If LL don't maintain logs and backups sufficient to investigate this then, as an IT professional with more than 35 years experience, I say they are literally incompetent.
As to the impact that it has on SL and OSG, it's really hard to say. The reality is that no government can stop a determined citizenry which wants to access something. Even the Chinese government's best efforts resulted in a Great Firewall which is decidedly porous and is dependent on physical means (i.e. informers, authoritarian policing, etc) to fill in the gaps. So if governments DO regulate (which governments love to do) then all it will do is stop the people who obey the law, and the criminals will just keep doing what they are doing.

Vickijoanne, I concur. I also have been in IT for 45+ years as well as dealing with legalities and lawyers all those years. What that incompetent Oberwager said was tin can Legal "cover my ass" garbage. If you read it close enough, it sounds like the U.S. State Dept. wrote it to make sure no one was "offended" but they were legally covered.
