AFAIK, Ruth 2.0 had a public test release in 2016. That was the first version that officially got out into the public.
In late 2017 came release candidate #1.
On February 24th, 2018, came release candidate #2. The mesh was finalised at this point. Roth 2.0 probably already existed, but all public testing was done with Ruth 2.0.
On December 29th, 2018, Ruth 2.0 release candidate #3 came out, along with the matching Extras box. The same day, Roth 2.0 release candidate #1 saw the light of day. They were the last versions released by Shin Ingen.
The most important unofficial, non-BoM forks were Sean Heavy's RuthToo RC#3 and RothToo RC#1. They're still available, and in fact, Sean has also released BoM versions recently. I guess they were meant to be soft forks in case Ruth 2.0 and Roth 2.0 got actual stable releases.
Hyacinth Jean, former owner of HGLuv, now owner of GroovyVerse, forked one version to Ruth Reloaded and Roth 2.0 RC#1 to Roth Reloaded. She also built an alternative head named Noggin 2.0 to match Ruth 2.0 RC#2. Most famously, she forked RuthToo to the slightly more voluptuous and more detailed LuvMyBod. When BoM had arrived, she forked LuvMyBod to Diana which was never finished.
Duck Girl forked RuthToo RC#3, modified the mesh to improve compatibility with fitted mesh made for the system body and allegedly also added BoM support. Her version was uploaded to Mediafire on March 27th, 2020; it is now included in the official Ruth2 repository.
In 2023, Pricella Paravane forked Duck Girl's fork and modified the mesh to improve compatibililty with Maitreya Lara/Athena clothing (she raised the shoulders).
Speaking of BoM: In 2019, Prof. Austin Tate, a.k.a. Ai Austin, took over the entire project as the new leader and gathered the old team behind himself to carry on.
One of the things they decided upon was to rename the last release candidates. This was required in order to be able to release new versions. The problem was that the "2.0" was not a version number, but part of the name. It symbolised the purpose of these bodies to become official OpenSim mesh bodies one day, taking the place of the system-body-based standard avatars Ruth and Roth. Very few people know that.
Now, a new version of Ruth 2.0 would have required a version number. But they couldn't name it "Ruth 2.0 2.0" or "Ruth 2.0 v2". That would have confused people. So what they did was declare the latest non-BoM versions stable releases and rename them "Ruth2 v3" and "Roth2 v1". This was done internally; the bodies were never re-released under their new names and/or with new box art.
And, of course, they prepared new versions: Roth2 v2, which came out on May 24th, 2020, and Ruth2 v4, which came out on August 29th with a hotfix following on September 2nd.
Serie Sumei and Sundance Haiku developed the most advanced BoM implementation ever seen on any mesh body in OpenSim to this day, controlled by a three-page HUD.
Ada Radius completely reworked the meshes. Alpha cuts with an alpha HUD were declared a thing of the past because BoM supports alpha masks on mesh bodies, and alpha cuts have never been more than a workaround for alpha masks not working with non-BoM mesh bodies, so they were obsolete. Thus, Ada sewed the bodies together to only a few parts that could be alpha'd out by HUD in case of emergency. She also made a "Business" variant of Ruth2 with no nipples in the mesh.
The team also made special "0.8.2.1" variants for those whose home grids still ran OpenSim 0.8.2.1, the latest stable release in 2020, but painfully outdated already. OpenSim 0.8.2.1 had only basic BoM support and no support for scripting BoM, and so the team made these variants with almost no scripts in them at all; BoM was permanently set to on for all meshes that support it. The "0.8.2.1" variants were released on September 7th, 2020. They are still quite useful when visiting places with avatar scripts turned off, as well as places which, for some reason, mess with BoM scripts.
I've yet to see any complete forks of either of the bodies be released. The only thing that's available out there are fingernails and toenails that were forked by Araminta Hexx to give each nail its own individual texture.
But the non-BoM bodies are still being forked occasionally. Remmy Ravenhurst has forked both Ruth 2.0 RC#3 and Roth 2.0 RC#1 and added her own much more simple BoM implementation. The reason was because she found Ruth2 v4 and Roth2 v2 impossible to use without the typical HUD-controlled tiny alpha cuts. Also, at that point, due to the completely botched Athena 6 and Adonis 4, everyone who didn't daily-drive Ruth2 v4 or Roth2 v2 believed that BoM does, in fact, not support alpha masks.
Ruth2 v4 and Roth2 v2 are in maintenance mode at best now. The team has switched to the Max project: entirely new bodies named Maxine and Maxwell, derived from the same mesh.
It was Ada Radius who kicked the whole project off. For one, the existing meshes had lots of issues that were hard or outright impossible to iron out. Besides, Ruth 2.0 and Roth 2.0 were originally made in Zbrush, and so it was futile to make dev kits with accurate skeletons for them in Blender. That's why there's no clothing that's rigged for either of these bodies as precisely as Second Life clothing rigged for Second Life bodies. Max is made in Blender right away.
Also, while Ruth 2.0 and Roth 2.0 were released under the AGPLv3, Max will be released under Creative Commons.
The BoM implementation is planned to be largely the same as for Ruth2 v4. It's highly likely that Maxwell, unlike any Roth2, will have mesh fingernails and toenails.
Unfortunately, for a number of reasons, the Max project has fallen dormant. I hope it will carry on, also because I've offered to test the bodies before they're released to the public.
