I've found a place to rediscover one of my old hobbies from Second Life: not just sailing, but fighting to the death against other ships from the Age of Sail (17th and 19th centuries). I found an ideal group in the Kitely grid, led by Trouble Ahead, a veteran Second Life captain, builder and creator, who along with other talented designers, has created two beautiful regions: the Catronian Archipelago, with a very fitting theme and ships of her own design that are representations of real vessels from the Dutch East India Company, and a combat system adapted from Second Life's original SPD. Also participating are members of the Celyddon Navy, a nice group that has relocated its colonies from grid to grid and maintains an active presence in Second Life. It's not uncommon to see captains from other grids and enthusiasts of sailing and combat from that era deploying their ships for battle.
There are other groups or grids, which I will discuss on other occasions, such as the impressive presence of Modde Parlez regions and ships, focused on Loose Cannon, also on Utopia Skye. Other role-playing grids also maintain regions set in that era, but I don't know their level of activity.
With a navigation system similar to other sailing ships and an intuitive HUD for managing sails and cannons, we circumnavigate the islands of the Sea of Battle, exchanging broadsides and avoiding enemy traps. We meet on Fridays at 12:30 p.m. PST (8:30 p.m. UT). Until the end of the last year, battles alternated with others on the Utopia Skye grid, but its closure to Hypergrid hopping means they are no longer held there.
Any ship compatible with the SPD system will work, although those from Trouble's shop in the Kitely market are the most common. However, there's a treasure hunt in the main region that, if completed, allows you to obtain one of Trouble's ships completely free.
That's how I got the one in the picture, although now, after being captured, instead of the Jolly Roger smuggler's flag, it flies my battle flag of Spanish Empire privateer. It also has a broomstick on the mainmast because in one of today's battles I wiped the enemy ships and earned the right to fly it.
You can find more information about this on Trouble's amusing website, especially in the "News and Gossip" section, although not everything she says (about me :D) is entirely true. In addition to the gossips :D there is information about the archipelago itself, the activities that can be done there, how to get a house or land there, and images of some of the beautiful places it contains...
Fair winds all!
