You mentioned losing IAR and OAR files, so I'm wondering if your entire disk was erased. Not just the database—how can a script wipe your entire disk, including the folders where your backups are stored?

I think you should investigate the issue of losing your data by focusing on other factors, such as human errors (unintentional data deletion), service provider errors (in which case, you may seek compensation if you were paying for a server), or other issues. It's really strange that a script would erase the entire contents of your disk.

Anyway, I'm reiterating my previous response:

Honestly, I have never read from any scripter, or even from those who create modules for scripts in Opensimulator, that a script can call a function to delete the entire database. There is a script, for example, that allows setting up a partnership between accounts, but it should make a call to a web-type function by connecting to a PHP page, thus making a call to something created and set up by the grid owner on their server.

Furthermore, there is an integrated security system for making HTML calls in Opensimulator (there is a specific section in opensim.ini and opensimdefaults.ini), so I don't think that was the issue. I don't believe the deletion of your entire database could be related to a script. :)

This is getting scarier by the time :( Could this happen to other Outworldz sims? To other sims using DreamGrid? Or Windows based?
Not sure which one the grid where I have my shop is using (apart from OS 0.9.2.) and I know they are doing offsite backups but..ugh :(

Well, at the time all this happened I was in bed and Mike was at work. So I know no one was 'legally' logged into our server. There were 3 of our members on the grid watching the assets disappear and reporting to Mike in our Discord group. There was nothing he could do about it. By the time he got home the grid was gone. IAR, OAR, backups all those files were gone. The ini files were gone. So if it wasn't a script then someone had managed to find their way into the server. In terms of the hosting company, they don't maintain our server, that is up to us. It just seems weird that files were selectively deleted. I don't have any answers and only one I have from a 3rd party is these scripts made to take advantage of the bugs in the sql database. I'm no scripter and certainly not a hacker. All I know it that it happened and people were there watching it happen. I have no difinitive answers just speculation. I wish I had answers so we can work out how to prevent this happening again.

If Resurgence was professionally hosted on an actual server, and it was still possible for amateurs to breach into the data centre and the machine and acquire full admin rights on Windows, then something is wrong with the hosting company.

I'm on the edge of saying that something is fundamentally wrong with Windows as an operating system for Internet servers. But I think only one out of maybe 15 grids is not running on Windows, and I refuse to believe that an operating system is so inherently unsafe and still regularly exposed to the Internet by professionals.

I still have to shudder thinking about those thousands of DreamGrids running on personal Windows computers behind provider-issued, customer-grade routers. Either they're even more unsafe, or if not, that'd say a lot about the hosting company.

Still, the backups are a key issue. DreamGrid is mainly intended for computers at home where you can stick a USB pen drive into the machine and copy the backups automatically created by DreamGrid onto that drive. I think if I said that securing DreamGrid backups on an external drive at home when the grid runs in a data centre is a bit more difficult, that'd be an understatement.

Nonetheless, if you start over, this will have to be done. It won't save your grid from being wiped, but you can always restore it, for it'll save your backups from being wiped.

Oh it will be backed up off the server now. There is no trust left.

I don't think hacking our server could be difficult though, especially when you think about global companies and governments getting hacked. Had a few really big hacks recently here in Australia where peoples data was downloaded to the dark web. We really are just small fish in the grand scheme of things.

This clearly wasn't an attack through OpenSim, using a script. This rather reads like someone having gained access to the underlying Windows system with full admin rights. (Resurgence was a DreamGrid, and DreamGrid is Windows-only.)

They could easily have deleted the whole DreamGrid. Then they might have snooped around on the machine, looking for backups outside the DreamGrid install, but still on the same machine, and deleted them as well.

Or they could simply have quick-formatted all drives in the machine, one by one, not only wiping out the grid but absolutely everything on the computer.

I would be curious to understand how they could have breached a paid server so easily, assuming you had a paid server, but even if it was a server within your "computer," how this could have happened.

Generally, servers from providers like Contabo or OVH are highly secure against these types of hacks. However, understanding how they managed it would be very helpful for the community.

I also think about those instances where grids accidentally delete the folder with all the assets. Obviously, if you delete the folder with assets on file, even if you reload an OAR, the textures and data of some types won't load, and you'll see almost everything in white and, in some cases, deformed. Then they claim someone hacked them, but instead, they deleted that folder, confusing it with the cache folder.

Of course, it may not be your case, but it has often happened to others.

Do you have more important information to share with the community to understand how you were hacked?

It looks like there are some scripts around designed to take advantage of some bugs in the script engine or something to break SQL databases. Not sure how it is uploaded right now but working on that. I think Pagane's post above (the link) has some good advice in it so we will try to lock down any future grid we set up with some extra safe guards.

Oh yes. @ZoeyRavenheart would you be willing to share more details about what they used? It would be helpful for all grids to close those gaps too.

Arielle... but why are there people like you who always comment unnecessarily... luckily there are many intelligent comments, how can you say such nonsense?

Can't you understand that it's a region that scams traffic for all Opensimulator users?

Do a favor to the entire community, use your head and think before writing these useless things...

I'm less impressed with intelligence then a bit of wisdom on what it takes to build and promote a community. A thread that relies on all caps to get its message across presents a weak argument and I am surprised that someone who claims intelligence would resort to it.

Enough with all this useless advertising where you always repeat the same things, and everyone criticizes you...

What a terrible shout you just made... but aren't you ashamed?

Everyone is judging you as someone not to be trusted (comments on some of your regions and old posts), and you advertise yourself as if nothing is wrong?

But realize that you are failing miserably and that your grid is really pathetic?

Well... you would make a better impression by renting a plot of land and creating a community on a functional grid! Fortunately, there are serious people with serious Italian grids, and believe me, we have to agree with those who warned us about you; your grid is not among the best in Italy... just a huge rip-off.

Best wishes!

Openlife, I sure hope you lose the attitude in this year of 2023. Always complaining, always judging, always negative. This is a time of year, should be peace throughout the world. Maybe try a little harder to be positive, and a better attitude. People on Opensim are doing their own thing. There not here to please you and your opinions. If they want to advertise, let them. Just keep scrolling without picking them apart. If they want 10 NPC's on their grid, let them. Don't visit, and keep on exploring, till your happy. There not hurting anyone by playing there own way. Mama says, " If you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything". Peace, Happy New Year!

What you write, SheaButter, is so silly! Ahhahaha, like many others, you make me laugh a lot, thanks for that...

From your useless comment, it's clearly evident that you're just a person lacking substance and offensive...

People like you, who respond to a post that brings to light a sacred and proven truth for everyone, and with your response, you offend anyone supporting this post, not only offend me without reason (why did you do that), people like you demonstrate with a few lines their level of intellect to the entire Opensimulator community, and even beyond for those who know you in other virtual environments...

I can imagine how much effort it must have taken you to write these 4 lines, squeezing your thoughts to the maximum to try to be amusing, indeed, you are funny hahahaha.

Now, I wish you the same, since without reason, you've been offensive and defend a place that is totally useless and mocking. From this comment, I hope people can understand how reliable you are by denying realities and needlessly attacking people.

Happy holidays, useless 'Lady'..

Thanks for the reply :) what do you think of those who still have 0.9.2.2 and have the possibility of XEngine waiting for the release of 0.9.3.0? I ask this because some people complain about problems with YEngine related to the engine, for example when closing some regions they give an error related to the relevant framework. Is it possible that YEngine is not yet stable enough compared to XEngine even if it is better and more advanced? For me it's a difficult choice...

CyberGlo has converted the script for the operating system, but I believe a paid plan is needed to obtain an unrestricted key. Perhaps you are right. I didn't know that you had already done the script as well, but Panther's version is very comprehensive.

Well I originally had one from a friend that used php and you had to have your own website, but then you sent me a different one later, and it wouldn't work with opensim. I fixed that one you gave me to work with opensim, and yes it needs an api-key. You may have to pay for an api-key to use it, but they are cheap as dirt, so no big deal.

Perhaps the translator isn't doing a good job, but from what I've understood, someone is envious of your grid? And who would that be? It doesn't matter how long the grids have been open; what matters is how the people inside them are and the intention of the grid. If you're fortunate and skilled, a new grid can thrive for up to 20 years and become one of the best. There are many examples in OpenSimulator of grids that were open a few years ago and are doing really well now. Who is it that envies your grid?

@RemmyRavenhurst

First of all, thank you for responding to the comment above in such an open manner and for presenting your reasoning instead of accusing me of being a flat-earther as the user "Grace Mondo" did (I also had a hard time translating her pointless comments, but fortunately there are better Italians than her, I'd say almost all of them). She responded with inappropriate and incoherent remarks, demonstrating ignorance because the UN resolutions and agreements of other countries are not misinformation, as she claimed, but rather rules and agreements on paper for years. I'm sorry, but I have to clarify this point, so in my opinion, a person who is not aware of the facts should be blocked.

That being said, I will respond to your comment. Unfortunately, there is little tolerance between the two factions, I know that. I have many Jewish friends, and they are good people. Some of them dislike Palestinians, while others believe that what is happening in Gaza right now is not at all right. However, we cannot ignore the terrorist acts of Palestinian extremist factions.

It must be said that as long as the agreements are not respected, this will be a real problem, and there will be no peace regardless. Honestly, at the moment, because the Jewish people are more widespread in the world than the Palestinians, there is clearly a greater intolerance on their part. For example, many of them who displayed pro-Israel flags have blocked me just for writing "peace in both directions," which is a logical thing to ask for peace from both sides. So we can say that there is a deep-seated hatred from some people close to Israel towards Palestinians, even though Gaza has been an open-air prison for the past 20 years, as many historians claim.

A step forward would be to respect the rules, to begin with, regardless of the hatred that the two peoples feel towards each other. Then, when Israel has given up the occupied territories to the Palestinians, liberated Gaza, and respected the UN and US resolutions, they can defend their right if attacked unjustly. But if, to defend yourself from terrorist attacks, you annihilate a people, even urging them to leave Gaza, causing a true exodus (many speak of war crimes or crimes against humanity, honestly, on TikTok, for example, the live videos are impressive), expropriating their homes and lands, and ignoring resolutions and agreements, there is little to justify. It's practically as if the police, to arrest a thief, killed half of the citizens, which would make little sense and be undemocratic.

Responding to hatred with hatred yields little... I also don't understand those Israelis who spit on the crosses of Christians when passing by churches, even though Christians are not waging war against them. So why do they do it? I really don't know, can you explain it to me? (One thing, I am neither Muslim nor Jewish, but I want to understand.)

In fact, many UN resolutions calling on Israel to withdraw from the occupied territories have been ignored for 70 years. Are you aware of this? A persecuted people should recognize the suffering of being persecuted, so why do they engage in persecution and land expropriation? Why? Wouldn't it be simpler to leave the territories free as requested and respect the agreements? What is the reason for occupying land against international law?

If your neighbour has stated that they want you destroyed from the river to the sea would you concede land to them? If they have no intention of living peacefully next to you do you concede land to them? This hatred goes back way longer than WW2 etc. While Id love to see peace there its not going to happen until this ancient hatred is dealt with.

You have to ask why it has been an open-air prison for the last 20 years? Could it have something to do with Hamas being in power there? They were voted in. Where hatred exists rules will not be respected. There has been a call for a global Jihad to attack people in other countries. People who have nothing to do with this situation. It is naive to think that if rules are followed that this hatred will stop.

I will say it again this Hatred goes back for 100s of years since the beginning of Islam. This is from the Hadith “Judgement Day will not come until the Muslims fight the Jews. The Jews will hide behind the stones and the trees, and the stones and the trees will say, oh Muslim, oh servant of Allah, there is a Jew hiding behind me — come and kill him.”

Then in the Bible Psalm 83 talks about the enemies of Israel
Psalm 83[a]
A song. A psalm of Asaph.
1 O God, do not remain silent;
do not turn a deaf ear,
do not stand aloof, O God.
2 See how your enemies growl,
how your foes rear their heads.
3 With cunning they conspire against your people;
they plot against those you cherish.
4 “Come,” they say, “let us destroy them as a nation,
so that Israel’s name is remembered no more.”
Id encourage you to read the rest of that psalm.

As for the conduct of Jews towards Christians I cannot say why other than Christian's belief in Christ as the Messiah bothers them or the persecution of Jews by Christians in history may also contribute. All I can say for sure is that when people believe in their own righteousness and that their cause is the right one, we end up with these situations. It is not just religious people who are prone to this eg Ukraine/Russia.

However, you've only made useless comments and try to present yourself as the best, but many know that you lack quality. So, who am I? Someone better than you. You seem to defend illegal content just because it suits you. You'd be more honest to say, "I love copied content and don't respect original creators."
