GRID UPDATE: 01/30/2024

Moonlight has been moved back to using the Dreamgrid software to make things a lot easier for us founders who can't seem to keep all that Linux information stored in our brains. Lol.

The grid is up, and for the most part, it is stable. The website is still being worked on, and because of all the integrations with the grid machine and the grid itself, the world is still going up and down as the website is being worked on.

For now, as the grid goes up and down, you are, of course, more than welcome to pop onto our main region, "Moonlight Landing," and say hi or take a look around to see what has been done in-world so far.

We have all our regions up and running and are in the process of updating many of them with new mesh builds, trees, etc. Please keep in mind we built all this back in 2016, so there are still a lot of regions that are very old "SL" style. We still have a bunch of empty regions that are actively being worked on as well.

The physical server is an HPE ProLiant DL380p Gen8 2U Rack Server, equipped with:

Dual Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2650 0 @ 2.00GHz 8/8 cores16 threads (totaling 32 logical processors),
240GB DDR4 ECC Registered Memory,
HP Smart Array P420i Controller 6Gbps SAS/SATA Controller with a 2GB Battery Backed Cache,
HPE Embedded 1Gb Ethernet 4-port 331i Adapter,
Intel X540-T2 Dual Port 10GbE RJ45 PCIe Adapter,
Redundant Dual 500W Power Supplies.

The bare metal operating system on the server is VMware ESXi 8, and it hosts a grid running as a Windows Virtual Machine. This configuration facilitates quick and easy snapshotting before updates/upgrades and allows for the easy reversal of potential grid-breaking changes. With this setup, we can also relatively easily migrate the entire grid to another server or add more servers if needed to support future growth.

The Virtual Machine is allocated 210GB of RAM and all 32 logical processors. Currently, it has 4TB of disk space allocated, with 2 out of 4 1GB network ports assigned, leaving plenty of room for expansion. Additionally, there are 2 10GB network ports available for a planned future internal network upgrade.

Arriving soon are 5 4TB EVO SSD drives that will be configured into a RAID 5 array for a total of 16TB of storage alloted to the grid. Eventually the remaining 20 bays will be configured with the same 16TB array for a nice storage space of 80TB!

Currently the server is connected to an AT&T 2.5GBs Synchronous Fiber connection. While the internal LAN connection is only a 1GB ethernet, the 2.5GB WAN connection allows for quite a bit of overhead for all the other servers and computers sharing the network.
