My sister Kal and I want to come! I checked out your website and the Register For Event doesn't seem to work. I keep looping back to the same page. I tried coming to your region hoping I could see you and I got no region found. I hope you are doing well and look forward to seeing you again.

Thank you for your review @Arielle. I do have a raft you can rez, and I will work on getting more rez points out and more visible. The raft works very well and Lavia worked on the script so it stays rezzed longer. Flying is allowed. I will check my settings. Thank you for letting me know and for your visit. You are welcome anytime.

Good work Lavia!! How sweet!
I would like to mention that we have a large Selea Core Collection at Star Jinn Palisade Mall. I cleaned up, reorganized, and reboxed everything from anywhere, plus, I had quite a bit that I had not seen anywhere else that I added to the mix. Mainly Elven and Fairy stuff. A few things I even had to fix as their textures had gone missing. Not her original look, but at least they are now usable.
It was a huge project, but her work is worth saving. A lot of stuff doesn't need scripts to work, so I have removed them. It will be better for your Sim. Like the Butterflies has at least 4 scripts in each. Imagine if you have dozens of them rezzed.
So while you are picking up Lavia's lovely pillows, swing by the Selea Core Shop and add to your collection.
I also have a shop there with all original content that you may like. I add new stuff as I make it or as I remember. My architectural builds are on the lowest level in their section. Misty Falls also has a shop near mine with some nice Animesh. It's a big place, plan to stay awhile. :) See you soon!

LOVE this! So glad you were able to get the help you needed to resolve your issues. THIS is what community is all about. We all come from many different grids(from all over the planet), and some of us are on the same grids, but being in Open Sim gives us all a unique opportunity to have the common goal of building a strong community of collaboration, helpfulness, and support of each other's goals and most important of all, establishing life-long friendships. I am not formally friends with most of the people on this site or Inworld, and yet I feel a strong bond of friendship with each of you that I encounter regularly, here, there, and everywhere. Thanks for that and thank you Safine for sharing such wonderful and positive news. So happy your grid is fixed! WTG Lone Wolf and Josh and Rafael!

I went to Transgenia (sp?) and was able to get a copy of a lot of the plants there. The plants I was looking for were not there. A few of the plants have alien-like sounds, but not the sound I remember. Maybe the ones I am looking for were not from there, it was so long ago that I acquired them and there were 4 or 5 of the same plant in different configurations, like a lone plant or 2 or more stalks where they flared out in a roundish shape at the top. They made the koolest sound when you approached them and stopped as you walked away. I am pretty sure they were flexi so moved with the wind, but I could be mistaken about that part.
I still have the Proximity sound script as I saved it to a flash drive and use it a lot in my region so everything isn't making noise all the time all at once. I would still have the plants if OSgrid had not had a meltdown a few years ago as I had transferred everything to my avatar there thinking since it was such a large grid, my assets would be safe. :/ :( Anyway...the plants are lost and I think the only way to get them is for a miracle to happen.
So yes!!! I am making my own or using the ones I found and using the scripts I need to make them behave the way I want. I am not a scripter, only a fiddler, so if I need help with scripting, I may be bugging a few people.
Thank you Nico for the suggestion of looking for sounds and providing a link. I have brought in a lot of sounds that I use, but I wasn't even thinking of looking for alien sounds, so thanks! I have made some sounds as well using the recorder in Windows. There is a long breath sound I use as part of the whispers in the forest, and that is me! :) It might be fun to experiment with making alien sounds too. I will have a look at what is out there too.
Thank you to everyone who has helped on this quest. You all ROCK!!!

I disagree with making something not modify. The reason is that things sometimes break and need to be fixed. I don't know how many times I have gotten something from somewhere and the doors don't work or a plant is floating higher than the rest of it, or not scripted and it needs to be, and so on. Sometimes the thing is no modify and that is when I need to use GM so I can fix it.

Thank you Nico for creating this discussion. Thank you Jupiter for your information and input. Let me explain further what I am looking for in a place for Newbies. It will be longwinded so grab a cup of tea. And a snack. Maybe a potty break. :)

Ideally, one would start in SL where it is set up to guide you when you first create your account and log in. I remember going through that tutorial all those years ago and learning how to walk like a duck and fly which was amazing. I learned about teleporting and getting around and how to find new places. I was lucky enough to somehow end up at the OLounge and meet the owner who was my first friend. He told me to dump the SL viewer and get Singularity. Then he taught me about the settings and how to use the viewer. He was a wonderful first mentor and we are still friends to this day. He let me set home there, and he also gifted me my first $100 Lindens. He told me everyone should have a bit of pocket change when I protested. The year was 2011.

The next day, I met another "mentor", just a guy in a sandbox I had landed in who helped me with my Avatar and took me to a freebie place to get everything I needed to make myself look better. It was great to stop walking like a duck and instead have this sexy walk that was almost embarrassing. I have tried to walk like that in RL. Kudos to my Avatar for being able to pull it off because I sure can't!

Anyway, I was taught the basic tutorial from what SL had set up, but the most useful was meeting these two gentlemen that were willing to take a total newb and teach her the ropes enough that my learning curve in how to exist in SL was so much easier. I am forever thankful for their help to a stranger they made a friend.

THAT is what I am looking for someone willing to mentor my friend on getting around, shopping, how to dress, etc. And just be her friend as well. Help her make friends. Besides me. She needs friends and people who will learn to care about her. Everyone should have a good friend circle.

I don't have time to teach her because of my projects in progress and other obligations, and honestly, I am not sure I have the patience atm. I have helped a few people over the years, so I know how difficult and time-consuming it can be to mentor someone, so if there are people out there willing to mentor Newbies, then we need to know about them because I am sure my friend is not the only person that will be interested in joining Open Sim, rather than SL and needs friendly folks willing to help them.

The perfect situation IMHO would be a grid accepting new accounts that are willing to give them a home so they have a home base and a place to live (some people can't afford to pay and folks that are willing to pay, it is after they have been around long enough to see the value of it).

Second, have members who are willing to mentor Newbies. A lot of times, people want to join virtual to connect with people, so they need to learn about all the social opportunities in OS. There is always a party going on somewhere to hang out and make friends. Teach them how to hypergrid and go shopping.

If we want to grow Open Sim, if we have newbie-friendly places and mentors out there, that will certainly help that as well. I know it is a lot bigger and a lot more populated than it was when I discovered it in 2015 and it had been around a long time by then and I never knew. Well, I am usually the last to learn about anything. :/

Thought?

I'm a terrible friend. Some days I can hardly get along with myself! I think I'm a good mentor for the right person. There are some people who are difficult to teach. But I'd be willing to give it a try. How do we set this up?

Having one person teach a noob everything is a challenge. It would be great if we could come up with a curriculum and people who could teach one subject. Then we could pass the person onto the person teaching the next topic.

Create a Noob Academy, perhaps? If we could get every grid to refer new residents to it, that would be a help. We could have "TP on touch" board set-up to auto-HG people to it....

Are you reading my mind, Nico? I was thinking along these lines myself, a Newb School. Multiple people involved is a good idea too, and volunteers willing to mentor one-on-one. Some may be good at working with the Avatar's appearance and shopping, another is better at basic viewer skills., and so on. No matter what grid you join, all the grids have a LM or TP to the Newb School for their new people. Self-guided tutorials would be set up for basic skills, but for in-depth help, they could sign up for a mentor or something. I don't know. just throwing around ideas. You are not a terrible friend.

Perhaps someone can host a Newb School region, attached to OSG. I suggest them because they are the largest grid, and where people joining on their own are likely to end up. Also, Noob or Newb can be seen as an insult, yes? Let's think of a different name.

In addition, It would be great if all grids a quality mesh AV as a default starter. If they are concerned about legal issues, it could be Ruth or Roth? Do grid owners have a communication network where this could be discussed?

Also, when and how can we get started with my mentoring your friend?

She is at the information-gathering stage. She isn't sure she even wants to join OS. If she chooses that it is something she wants to do, I want to find out what resources are available to help new people. Several people have offered to help her, so if she does join, I am sending her to all of you! :) When I was in college studying fine arts, I always wanted a new instructor each semester. I think I hurt my Watercolor 1 Professor's feelings by taking Watercolor 2 from an adjunct Professor. Some people want tutelage under the same Master, but some of us see the value of learning from different perspectives and styles of teaching. I appreciate all the input and interest in this and the offers of help for my friend either posted here or discussed in PM. You are all special people for being so kind as to want to help someone you don't even know. I like the idea of having a Newbie School, no matter what we name it. Figuring out the logistics and format will take some folks willing to get together and plan and implement it. If this happens, I don't have time atm, which started this whole convo, but in the future, I will be happy to Mentor as well. Nico, if she signs up I will let you know. Thanks for your willingness to help. You ROCK!

Thank you Kelso. I was able to get one there, but sadly it is unscripted. The scripted volcano that they have is awesome, but not copy. I will see what I can do with the one I picked up. In any case, the look and size of it are perfect. I love this region! What a hidden gem. I am so happy you suggested it. Their Freebie store is fabulous.

Thanks, Jamie I did just that! I was able to take a copy of some of them, and though the place seemed familiar, I didn't find the particular alien plants I am looking for. What I found will work, but I am really looking for the sound they made. Some of the plants I found have sound, which is great, but not the sound I remember. I will probably have to end up settling. Thanks for the help. I appreciate you.

It's possible you could fine an alien/sci fi sound to add to plants here: https://freesound.org/

Someone likely has, or can make, a proximity detecting sound-playing script. Then, do a search for "free sound effects alien." You will find a lot of sites. Jamie mentioned one. The top search result, Pixabey, has several alien sounds. I listened to a few, and the "Intergalactic Communication - Science-Fiction Sounds" might work. https://pixabay.com/sound-effects/search/alien%20sounds/

I looked at the Kitely Market Place and saw nothing like the plants I remembered. Today, I went to the Kitely grid to look at the region, Transgenia and I think that maybe this was the place I visited years ago. I thought it was on Metropolis Grid, but it was more likely on OSgrid since they were once located there. Sadly, the plants I am looking for are not there. Thanks to everyone who has tried to help. Time to go to Plan B. Thanks again!

I only saw them at this place on the Metropolis grid, never anywhere else. I looked through the Transgenia stuff on the Kitely Market as I would pay for them if need be, but I saw nothing like these plants. I also looked on SL Marketplace, just to see if they are in their shop, but nothing. I honestly don't think they were the creator, but I could be wrong. Thank you for your response. It was helpful in any case. :)

Thank you, Misty. Though they are lovely alien plants, these are not the ones I am looking for. I believe they were made from sculpts and they made an alien sound when you got near them.

If you go to the Transgenia region on Kitely there should be tons of freebies for folks who visit. Daniel Hoffman rocks that way:)
