My guess is that it's a system limitation. Eyes have to be sunken to keep them from clipping through the head at lower LOD. On Ruth2 v4 and Roth2 v2 which have their own heads, the eyes are sunken, too.

It depends on what you're looking for.

If you only want to have the newest hottest stuff that has only just arrived from SL (Legacy, LaraX etc.), then you're out of luck. It's generally offered exclusively with limited perms and with no boxes.

But if what you're looking for includes older content, there are quite a few shops that offer them by boxes. Yes, quite a few boxes may have been god-moded to make this possible.

For starters, there's the Freebie Store 2024 in AviWorlds.
https://opensimworld.com/hop/84040
It offers a lot of stuff, including older things that are increasingly hard to come by while still being useful. But especially the older areas have content for all kinds of avatars/bodies mixed like Adonis clothes next to Apollo clothes next to mesh clothes rigged for the system body next to layer clothes.

Carpe Noctem can take a while to browse with its many shops, but it's quite organised.
https://opensimworld.com/hop/87491

Another classic with lots of boxes to copy: The Spoiled Diva Freebbie Store.
https://opensimworld.com/hop/85055

The biggest selection by far has to be at Stark North District.
https://opensimworld.com/hop/89605
In theory, everything is neatly organised into themed stores. But it's so much stuff that the stores tend to be cluttered, and not everything is in the store it belongs into, also because there is no store dedicated to the system body. Still, you're likely to find things that are really hard to find.

Lastly, maybe I can help you out with some older items myself, especially things that are or used to be able at Klamotto.

Jupiter you are a fountain of Opensim knowledge, thank you so much! I am mostly looking for Athena stuff for women and Gianni/Adonis/Apollo for men. I know the Legacy/LaraX etc. things are hard/impossible to find and I have no issues with buying those and bringing them to Opensim. As for the older stuff.. I plan to over time retexture things and/or create outfits with multiple items from multiple makers. It's a work in progress really, but I need to start somewhere so i figured to get boxed stuff so at least there is some content whilst I work over time on doing something a bit more original :) I will check out the stores you mentioned, thank you!

You mean something that rezzes a pair of skates which an avatar can slip into and go skating? Works like a driveable vehicle, but can be worn like shoes? I don't even know if that's possible.
Yes, exactly that. if I can even find a pair of skates with an AO that has MCT, I can create the script and put them in a box so that when someone clicks it they will receive the skates and the AO
like(0)
I know that there are wearable skates with a built-in AO. They may even be convertible to khAOs, I haven't checked that.

But your description sounds like a rezzer that you click, then a pair of ice skates rezzes in-world, standing upright on the ice, you "sit" on the skates like you would sit in a vehicle, and your feet automatically rig into the skates instead of the skates rigging onto your avatar.

And this is what I've never seen.

no, it would give the skates to the person who is touching the object. A folder with skates and the AO

Do you know Lemmy? Like Reddit, but part of the Fediverse and decentralised like Mastodon?

Hyacinth Jean has started a Lemmy community for OpenSim a while ago. https://sh.itjust.works/c/opensim

As for all the Second Life bodies, AFAIK, there are no dev kits freely available in OpenSim, especially not for picking up in-world in OSgrid or any other grid.

The dev kit for Ruth 2.0 RC#2 and RC#3 is here:
https://github.com/RuthAndRoth/Ruth2/tree/master/Mesh/Ruth...

The dev kit for Ruth2 v4 is here:
https://github.com/RuthAndRoth/Ruth2/tree/master/Mesh/Ruth...

The dev kit for Roth2 v2 is here:
https://github.com/RuthAndRoth/Roth2/tree/master/Mesh

You can also pick up some development-related stuff for Ruth2 v4 and Roth2 v2 on their official sim in OSgrid (which, unfortunately, is not listed on OSW):
hg.osgrid.org:80:RuthAndRoth

However, the dev kit for Ruth 2.0 RC#2 and RC#3 is not very good, and the dev kits for Ruth2 v4 and Roth2 v2 are even worse. That's because building dev kits in Blender for bodies that have not been made in Blender is difficult to the point of being half-useless.

New bodies as successors to Ruth2 v4 and Roth2 v2 are in the making with meshes scratch-made in Blender. But I don't expect them until well into next year.

Notice: The underwater level actually drops you under water. So come as a mermaid or a merman or in SCUBA gear right away. Otherwise, don't complain about ruined clothes or almost drowning.

I know at leat three places with club lights, but one of them is down, and I'll have to go inspect the other two to tell you exactly where the club lights are. All original stuff made in OpenSim, by the way.

It sometimes appears to me like the OpenSim community isn't used to Blinn-Phong, maybe not even to shiny surfaces in general. Maybe that's because they've rarely been exposed to it over the years. I guess that at least some content that was ripped from SL had normal maps and/or specular maps at the source, but whoever stitched the export back together after importing it into OpenSim often didn't know what to do with them and threw them away. In the rare cases you see Blinn-Phong in action nowadays, it's usually on original OpenSim content.

All of my Opensim content has had materials for years and I advertise it regularly. Now that I'm transitioning to PBR, I'm keeping all those original blinn-phong textures intact for those who are unable to upgrade to the PBR viewer and those whose grids or graphics are unable to support it.

Seriously, if your machine has got what it takes, set your viewer to shared environment, crank your graphics settings up as far as you and your hardware can bear (shadows strongly recommended), take off your facelight and spend a few hours just walking around and taking in the scenery.

This is not a place for the faint of hardware. Best viewed in Firestorm 7 with its higher dynamic range.

You need two things. One, a viewer. For complete beginners, I recommend the Firestorm Viewer version 6.6.17. You can get it here (IMPORTANT: Download Firestorm for OpenSim, not for Second Life!):

https://wiki.firestormviewer.org/fs_older_downloads

Two, an avatar. Which also means a user account. You don't have it yet. This place is not the official OpenSim website where you register an avatar. It's only a third-party info site.

One important thing to know is that OpenSim is not a centralised, monolithic silo like Second Life or almost all other virtual worlds out there. It is not one world. It's many worlds, so-called grids. They all have different, independent owners, and they all run in different, independent places. OpenSim is akin to over 4,000 independent, big and small Second Lifes.

But almost all of them are connected to one another via the so-called Hypergrid. This means that you don't need an avatar on each grid where you want to visit a place. You can have an avatar on one grid and still visit most other grids with this self-same avatar.

I could tell you to go find a grid that suits you. But when I was a newbie, that wouldn't have helped me that much either. I know a thing or two about decentralised networks, and one of them is that the easiest way to on-board newbies is to tell them one specific instance to join.

The oldest grid in OpenSim and one of the two biggest grids is OSgrid. Go there to register an account and an avatar:

https://accounts.osgrid.org/?q=user/register

IMPORTANT: Names in OpenSim are always exactly 2 words, a first name and a last name.

It's a pity that nobody builds their own houses in OpenSim anymore.

Here's what that stuff looked like in real life: https://www.goretro.com/2015/10/10-grooving-conversation-p...
