I've made the Kawaii Skulls jewelry set out of frustration. I've seen a lot of spectacular sets that are incredibly heavy, having tons of unnecessary geometry that only shines if you hyper zoom into the avatar.
My approach was making the details bigger, using the same method as theatre, where the props are enormous to be clearly visible from the back rows. I tried to make the scale of the links of the chains big enough to be visible from a normal distance but simple enough to not overwhelm viewers with geometry.
The result is a nice set of cute skulls that includes earrings, a necklace and a belly button piercing.

You will also find that in rigging jewelry the data increases making the jewelry even more heavy. With my jewelry some is heavy due to the many gems and it is not created in Blender. I use Rhino which creates a finer mesh which makes cleaning up even more challenging trying to reduce the details are lost. Bigger details and mesh that is not as fine would be ideal. Prettier and rigged jewelry is heavier.

You have that right. I only rig rings. I have tried to rig necklaces and they flop around unrealistically. Rings work well so I stick with that. I have classic and rigged for Athena. I found a great free tutorial online that had the bento hands ready for rigging rings so it was fairly painless. BUT the data increased the jewelry twice as much because of the data.

I used Substance Painter that creates great maps, I also used PS I did this in the beginning but the difference was not substantial enough for the work flow, it was tedious and takes more time than I usually have, juggling many projects. Plus giving it free I figure persons can take the jewelry to Blender and fine tune it if they wish to. Designing and creating it is the gift :) and YES I do try to reduce each piece but each is different and will only reduce so much. I have not crashed any grids yet lol

Ah yes, substance does good maps indeed, for reasons beyond the scope of this website I use blender for everything, most of the time making geometry that will just generate the maps i need to then apply them to the object that i'm making. It's a process, as personal and unique as any other process. I guess it's the consequence of working solo!

Looks like my last comment got deleted. I used Blender originally and wanted to create jewelry RL so researching the best 3d Printers for Fine Jewelry it was suggested to use Solidscape. The Solidscape rep said that Blender created jewelry was not fine enough detail for Fine RL jewelry and he suggested Rhino. RL was such that I could not get set up with RL workshop (MS and using tools). So I had the expensive Rhino software, what to do with it. I thought to create virtually and have a small store and create a few sales. I then began giving freely so that persons could modify and make it their own for their stores. I might look at Blender again for creating inworld jewelry to lower the cost. I will need to brush up on Blender again, I forgot some of my earlier skills using the modifiers. As far as what to do the with the expensive Rhino software? I could do boat designing :) much more profitable too!

I used Blender in the beginning only. I wanted to create my jewelry with 3d printing and at the time the best 3d printer for nice jewelry was Solidscape. When I inquired about it the sales person said Blender created jewelry was not "fine" enough for quality 3d printed jewelry that would be considered fine jewelry. That was the goal then, he suggested Rhino for fine jewelry. I played with Rhino and the difference for RL jewelry was obvious. Things happened due to health that made it impossible to then have a RL workshop but I had that great Rhino software. What to do with it? Create virtually since I paid so much for the software I wanted to see it utilized. Blender is best for opensim and the jewelry doesn't need to be fine to be inworld. Since I switched from Blender to Rhino I lost some of my earlier skills using the modifiers to bend and make great details I will look at it again and maybe switch over. All that earlier blender jewelry was not too bad inworld BUT it would have been less "fine" for the fine jewelry.
